In the first annual SMILEY All-Star Game, the host American Leaguers defeated the National League by a 4-1 score.
The American League wasted no time in getting to Cy Young favorite Bob Gibson. Mike Andrews flied to center to start the game. Jim Fregosi (a somewhat controversial selection to the team as Boston's Rico Petrocelli had better offensive and defensive stats) drew a walk. Hometown hero Carl Yastremski followed with a base hit to right and moved to second on Hank Aaron's throw as Fregosi moved to third. The reliable Gibson then uncorked a wild pitch allowing Fregosi to score the first run of the game. Gibson would recover and strike out Reggie Jackson and Frank Howard to end the threat.
The National League took advantage of some shoddy AL defense to tie the game in the top of the second. Willie McCovey grounded out and Johnny Bench struck out to start the inning. Earl Wilson looked in good shape to end the inning as Mike Shannon stepped to the plate. Shannon hit a shot down the line that Cesar Tovar speared but then threw away allowing Shannon to reach second on the hit and error. Del Maxvill followed with a single to center that scored Shannon. Bob Gibson then reached on a Jim Fregosi error but Wilson averted further damage by retiring Lou Brock on a fly to right.
The game remained tied as Jerry Koosman and Dave McNally tossed a pair of shutout innings each. Lindy McDaniel then threw a perfect top of the fifth. The National League then brought in Luis Tiant (the former AL star) to pitch. Cesar Tovar led off with a double and Bill Freehan was hit by a Tiant pitch. Pinch hitter Rod Carew, the AL's leading hitter, grounded into a force to put men on the corners. Baltimore's Boog Powell then pitch hit for hometowner Mike Andrews and promptly launched a Tiant fastball over the green monster for a 3 run homer. Tiant settled down and retired Fregosi and pinch-hitter Jimmy Wynn to end the inning.
The National League would not threaten again as a stable of AL all-stars held the senior circuit to 2 singles and a walk over the last 4 innings.
