A complete reversal from last years game, as offense was the name of the 2nd SMILEY All-Star game....
The N.L. basically ended this game before it started, scoring 6 runs in the first and chasing starter Andy Messersmith before he could record an out. The leadoff man bet his teammates that he could get on base twice in the first inning, and he did. A leadoff walk, a hit and run single by Maury Wills, and another walk to Willie McCovey loaded the bases. A Mike Ryan passed ball brought in the first run, and was just the first of many miscues by the A.L. in the inning. Hank Aaron followed with a single on an X play, then Tony Perez singled and advanced to third when Harmon Killebrew threw the ball away. Johnny Bench followed with a 2 run double to chase Messersmith and bring on Don Cardwell. He finally got the first out when Tommie Agee grounded out, but Julian Javier hit another double. Sam McDowell lined out, then the betting man (whose name I will not use) got his second walk of the inning before Wills popped out to end the inning. Tommie Agee would add a homerun in the 3rd to complete the carnage for the N.L.
The A.L. would push across runs in the 4th and 5th before making things interesting in the 7th. Gaylord Perry was brought in and the spitter must have been a little dry this evening. With one out, five straight AL'ers reached base, 3 via the walk, before Luis Aparicio flew out for the 2nd out. Reserve catcher John Roseboro then lined a single, scoring the 3rd run of the inning before Killebrew was thrown out at the plate by Matty Alou on a split of 18. The A.L. would get a runner on base in the 8th and 9th but never really threatened again. The game ended with Hoyt Wilhelm striking out pinch hitter Rick Wise.
Although going 2-2 as a reserve, Don Kessinger was overlooked for game MVP. The award instead went to Hank Aaron who was 2-3 with 2 rbi's. Only Ron Perranowski did not make it into the game.
