The A.L. used the longball to open up a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings, only to see the N.L. score 6 times in the 6th en route to an 8-4 victory.
Mr. MVP Of Everything, Willie McCovey, got things going when he launched a Bob Johnson pitch deep to center to lead off the second inning. It stayed that way until the 4th inning. Jerry Koosman replaced starter Gaylord Perry and immediately ran into trouble. Tony Oliva led off with a single and moved to second when Boog Powell walked. Harmon Killebrew then hit a line single to left. Oliva was thrown out at the plate when Johnny Bench managed to block Oliva's hook slide. The play may have proven costly as Cesar Tovar then hit one into the seats to give the A.L. the lead. That would have been the first grand slam in SMILEY All-Star history had Oliva held at third. Ed Herrmann then followed by launching a 3-1 fastball into the seats as well, and the A.L. was up 4-1. The N.L. got one back in the bottom of the inning when Boog Powell misplayed Johnny Bench's grounder which allowed Clarence Gaston to score.
It stayed that way until the 6th inning. Dave LaRoche came in for the A.L. and walked Billy Grabarkewitz to start the inning. Back-to-back doubles by Bobby Tolan and McCovey knotted the score at 4. Ray Culp was brought in to face pinch hitter Dick Dietz. Dietz lifted one to center that Reggie Jackson could not get to and the N.L. led 5-4. Bench grounded into a dp and Culp looked like he could get out of the inning. Billy Williams walked and then Gene Alley laced a shot right over the third base bag (rolled a 1-11). Tony Perez then finished the damage with a 2 run homer. The A.L. managed one baserunner in each of the last 3 innings but never seriously threatened again.
