The N.L. took a 3-1 lead in the All-Star series with a 4-1 victory over the host American League at Tiger Stadium.
Tom Seaver and Vida Blue both had easy first and second innings, allowing 1 hit but facing the minumum. Blue allowed a first inning single to Glen Beckert but then got Joe Torre to hit into a double play. Reggie Jackson got the A.L.'s first hit in the second but was then caught stealing.
The N.L. broke through in the 3rd. Ted Simmons led off with a single and then Fred Patek hit a little comebacker to the mound but Blue couldn't pick it up and Patek was credited with a single. Ted Uhlaender pinch hit for Seaver and singled in the first run of the game, ending the day for Blue. Steve Kline came in and gave up a sac fly to Bobby Bonds and the N.L. ended the inning up 2-0.
A Simmons error, single and wild pitch put A.L. runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, but Don Sutton struck out Amos Otis and got Roy White to fly out to escape danger. The A.L. finally pushed their lone run across in the 4th when Deron Johnson led off with a double. Pinch runner Cesar Tovar scored on a 2-out single by pinch-hitter Duke Sims. The N.L. got that run right back in the 5th. Uhlaender singled again, went to second on a passed ball and stayed there as Rusty Staub worked a walk. Tom Bradley seemed to get out of trouble as he got Glenn Beckert and Joe Torre out but then Hank Aaron singled in the N.L.'s 3rd run of the game.
Neither team mounted much of threat until the N.L. closed out the scoring in the 8th inning. Ken Sanders gave up singles to Manny Sanguillen, Billy Williams and Fred Patek for the N.L.'s 4th run of the game. Juan Marichal, Jim Brewer and Phil Niekro closed out the last 2 innings for the N.L..
Montreal's Ted Uhlaender was named the MVP after going 2-2 scoring once and driving in the first run of the game.
