This was yet another All-Star game that ended practically as soon as it began, as the National League pounded A.L. starter Dick Drago to the tune of seven hits and 6 runs in the first two innings. Three of the seven hits were triples, including back-to-back shots by Chris Speier and Willie Davis in the second (Davis had also tripled in the first inning).
The N.L. struck hard in the first frame, the key hit being a 2-run homer by local hero Billy Williams. Already up 3-0, the pair of triples and a Joe Morgan single in the second gave the home team a 6-0 lead. The A.L. pitchers would not allow another run, but the damage had clearly been done.
The A.L. managed to put single runs on the board in the third, fourth & seventh, but 6-3 was as close as they could get. N.L. starter Don Sutton threw three innings for the victory, and Tug McGraw closed it out for the save. Willie Davis was named the game's M.V.P.
