By Mike Tomeo

For the third time in its seven game history, the All-Star game finished with a 4-1 score. The American League has now won two of those three games.

The AL struck early. After Rod Carew and Sal Bando grounded out, Carl Yastrzemski and Dick Allen lashed back-to-back doubles to give the AL a lead it never relinquished. The AL threatened again in the second. Johnny Briggs led off with a walk but was erased when Thurmon Munson hit into a double play. Larry Bowa then got the AL’s third double of the game. Going for the early kill, Hal McRae pinched hit for starter Luis Tiant and drew a walk. Don Gullett got Carew to ground out again to escape the inning. The NL got their first threat going in the 3rd when they sandwiched two singles between Bart Johnson striking out the side.

The AL broke it open (such as could be in a 4-1 game) with a 2 out rally in the fourth. Munson and Bowa singled and then pinch hitter Gene Tenace walked to load the bases. Rod Carew was not about to strand more runners as he laced a Jim Perry pitch into right field for a 2 run single and a 3-0 lead. Andy Messersmith came on to get Sal Bando and prevent further damage. The NL would get a man in scoring position in the fifth when Joe Morgan singled and Bill Russell walked, but Bill Buckner flew out to end the threat.

The NL finally get on the board in the sixth, thanks to hometown players. Richie Hebner led off with a single and scored on a Willie Stargell double. The next 3 batters made outs to end the NL inning. After the AL went down 1-2-3, the NL quickly threatened again. Elliott Maddox led off with a double and moved to third on a flyout but was stranded as Russell popped out and Buckner grounded out. The NL threatened yet again in the 8th. Hebner led off with another single and Lou Brock walked. Cesar Geronimo sacrificed them up a base but Dave Rader struck out. Tom House was brough on to hit and flied out to end the inning.

Don Wilson came on in the ninth as the third Cincinnati pitcher used and he became the third Reds pitcher to surrender runs in the game. With 2 out and nobody on, Bob Watson singled and scored on a Bobby Grich double. Tom Seaver then came on to get George Brett to pop out to end the inning. The NL went down quietly in the ninth, with Ken Forsch and Mike Marshall getting 3 flyball outs. Kansas City ss Larry Bowa was named the games MVP for his 2-2 performance.

The NL leads the overall series 4-3 and the home team has a 4-3 advantage as well.
