For the first time in SMILEY's 8 seasons, there was a shutout in the All-Star game. The NL jumped out early and never looked back while the AL never put up much of a fight, getting just 5 hits on the night.
The NL wasted little time in getting to AL starter Jim Hunter. Reggie Smith worked a walk between a flyout and popout. Game MVP Mike Schmidt (3-3, 2 rbi) singled and advanced to second on the throw to third. Rusty Staub then lined a "clutch" single scoring both runners. Hunter got out of the inning without further damage but was back in trouble immediately in the second. Hunter hit Dave Kingman to start the inning then Chris Speier hit a shot down the line that Mayberry was able to stop but he threw wildly to Hunter covering the bag, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with no one out. After Tom Seaver drove in Kingman with a groundout, Speier scored when Joe Morgan reached on an error by Graig Nettles. After Smith struck out, Garvey and Schmidt both singled to produce the 5th NL run and end Hunter's evening. Al Fitzmorris came on to get Staub to end the inning.
The AL put up their only serious threat in the bottom of the 2nd when Roy White singled with 2 outs. Pinch hitter Rick Manning then doubled but White was held at 3rd base and Rod Carew struck out to end the threat. The NL tacked on run #6 in the 4th when Smith doubled and scored on a 2 out base hit by Schmidt. Bobby Bonds led off the AL 4th with a double and moved to third on a groundout but was stranded as the next two batters lined out. Innings 5-7 went quickly as only 3 players reached base, with 2 of them erased by double plays. Von Joshua completed the scoring when he hit a home run off Gaylord Perry.
