Trying to prove I wasn't a stat major in college for nothing..... :-)
The Pyth2 Projections for SMILEY are an attempt to determine the record of a team based solely on the talent on a team's roster and the amount of playing time
that each player receives. In this method, I'm attempting to drain away all the "luck" (as well as other factors aside from raw talent which influence the outcome of
games) and derive the record of a team using the assumption that all players perform exactly as they did in MLB during that season, in terms of their On Base
Percentage (OBP) and Slugging Percentage (SLG). This is applied both to batters and to pitchers.
The Pyth2 Projection begins with a team's Runs Created and Runs Created Allowed (as opposed to actual runs scored & allowed), adjusts the RC totals to account
for the over- or underachievement of all players, weights each batter's playing time by plate appearances (batters faced, for pitchers), and converts the resulting run
totals into wins and losses using Bill James' Pythagorean formula - hence the name Pyth2.
Finally, I account for the level of competition in the league - while a player's stats are formed in the context of his team, a team's wins & losses occur in the
context of the league as a whole. The Pyth2 records shown below are only estimates of course, but the formulas are pretty rational. We know exactly
what all players were supposed to do, although the best way to convert a line of statistics into runs and then wins is something that stat geeks have
been working on for decades. It's highly unlikely that these estimates are 100% correct, but they are in the ballpark. If the Pyth2 says that a team had 82 wins
worth of talent on their roster, they may have really had 79 or 85, but they very likely did not have as few as 75 or as many as 89 wins there. The Runs Created
estimates are more accurate than THAT - if they weren't, people would have stopped using them long ago. We can reasonably conclude that a team whose actual record deviated greatly from their Pyth2 Projection did so for reasons other than talent.
And that's hardly an odd case. Over the course of any season, some teams will experience especially good "luck" and others will do the opposite. Very often,
the breaks do not come close to evening out over the course of 162 games. Having HAL run our teams for 81 games per year should tend to have a levelling effect, assuming he is
equally idiotic in his decision making for all teams, but there is surely a wide variation of abilities among human owners that may lead to a significant difference in team performances.
On occasion, owners have incentive to lose rather than win. It is quite common to see that teams with very bad records played well below their actual talent level. This can
have the domino effect of making other teams achieve results well ABOVE the true level of their talent.  Almost no non-expansion team has so little talent that they deserve to lose over 100 games, regardless of the level of competition around them. Any league
where the draft order is based on the reverse of the prior year's standings (even with a weighted lottery) is prone to that sort of behavior, simply because it is the
most logical option for an owner who determines that he is very unlikely to win in the current season.
These estimates form a basis for determining how good a team "really" was, without the data being polluted by good or bad dice rolls, split cards, other forms of
luck, the ability of the manager, the dis-ability of HAL, etc. In retrospect, some pennant-winning teams don't look so great (I guess it must have been superior
managing that got the Reds to the top - finally - in 1974, because they weren't the best team), and many also-rans ought to have been contenders. At the other end of the spectrum, were teams
who posted horrendous records truly all THAT terrible "on paper"? Which teams have been unusually blessed (or cursed)? Which teams performed well in the clutch
and which choked? Why do some years/divisions have wide variations from the expected results, while others do not?
Now that we can see the expected results, we have a starting point for answering those kinds of questions.
The +/- number after the Pyth2 results is the difference between what a team really did, and what their talent merited. For example, the 1968 Giants did
10 games better (from 93 wins to 103) than they were expected to that season. This is not unusual: teams that win a very large number of games in a season do tend to
overachieve somehow - but not always, and not always by THAT much. Some teams which should dominate may still win, but not to the degree that was expected. Talent alone rarely determines exactly
where each club finishes the race, and replay leagues would be pretty boring if it always did.
