Subject: Reds @ Mets
With our luck at Riverfront Stadium reaching a new low lately (no mean feat!), the Reds hit the road hoping to find even one small morsel of good fortune. The first two games took a combined 29 innings to decide the outcomes, while game 3 was a "classic" of its own, in far more typical Cincinnati fashion.... Game 1: Cincy stole 4 bases in 4 attempts against Johnny Bench, but that's probably not the most remarkable thing about this game. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run (SB+E2), but trailed 2-1 in the ninth. George Foster singled to open the inning, but Skip Lockwood fanned the next two batters (including Luis Melendez, when the idiot Reds manager, blinded by his rage at his usual "luck", mistakenly allowed Melendez to bat vs. a RHP). Incredibly, the next two batters singled, the tying run scored, and the game went into extras after the Reds left the bases loaded. Cincy again loaded the bases in the tenth, but a well-timed GIDP (Melendez strikes again) ended that threat. More incredible feats: twice in extras, the Mets got a triple - including a leadoff triple in the 10th - and failed to score. Eschewing any gutless IWs, Dave LaRoche calmly fanned Remy & Harmon to end the tenth after a Bench groundout, and didn't even flinch when the Mets again tripled (with two outs this time) in the 11th. Cincy won it in the 12th with some more help (SB+E2) from our ex-catcher when Dave Concepcion's sac fly plated Cesar Geronimo. Two unearned runs lost it for New York, and Dave LaRoche tossed 4 innings (1 BB, 7 K) to earn the victory. Game 2: The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, and would not score for the next 14 frames. The Reds bullpen registered 11 scoreless innings (the Mets did nearly as well), and Dave Concepcion once again got the game-winning RBI, singling home Pete Rose in the 17th. Bob Apodaca walked the bases loaded in the 11th, but escaped, leaving it to Game One starter Jon Matlack (who also appeared as a pinch-hitter) to take the loss. Stan Bahnsen got his first win of 1976, and Joe Sambito his first major league save. Game 3: With his teammates having exhausted a season's worth (for us) of luck in the first two games, it was left for Tom Seaver to resume Cincy's regularly-scheduled program of record-setting underachievment: Seaver tossed a complete-game 2-hitter.... but because both hits were solo homers, and because he received no offensive support, Seaver lost by the score of 2-1. LOB: CIN - 9, NYN - 2. Alan |
