Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Cincy pitching (specifically the starters) still is performing well below par, but the team has begun winning: not impressively, but winning nonetheless.... Game 1: The Reds scored 10 runs, which was just enough for Dock Ellis to stumble to a 10-6 victory. Four singles sandwiched around a 2-base Rico Carty error in the CIN fourth plated 5 runs and gave Cincinnati an 8-4 lead at that point. Joe Sambito & Dan Larson finished up by allowing 0 runs in 2.1 innings of relief. Game 2: Tom Seaver's early 2-0 lead became a 4-2 deficit by the ninth inning, at which point Pablo Torrealba walked a couple of batters and Pete Rose tied the game with a double. In the Cincy 12th, Mike Beard faced one batter (and retired him) then Charlie Williams came in and immediately gave up Doug Flynn's first major league home run. The roof then proceeded to fall in, aided by Vic Correll (now in right field for some reason) blowing an x-play. Final score: 7-4. LaRoche (1.2 IP) & Eastwick (4 IP) allowed zero runs after Seaver finally departed. Game 3: Phil Niekro almost made a 1-0 first-inning lead hold up, but Gary Nolan matched Niekro for the most part, and the score was 1-1 in the ninth. Mike Marshall grooved one to Joe Morgan, who deposited the pitch over the right field wall, and the Reds won 2-1. LaRoche tossed a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of 1976. Game 4: No pitchers duel today: Gary Ross & Don Gullett alternated allowing big innings. Gullett was removed after permitting a 4-spot in the ATN fourth, but the Reds came back with 6 runs to take a narrow lead into the eighth. The Highly Unlikely Split Card Events began when Dan Larson (a #5-card hitter) batted for himself to lead off the CIN 8th and rolled his 3 column, where he has only a 1.67% chance of making an out. He found it. In the bottom of the inning, Larson allowed a pair of singles to open the frame, and Rawly Eastwick took over with a 2-run lead. The first batter Eastwick faced, Willie Davis, had exactly the same chance (1.67%) of hitting a homer in his 1 column as Larson had of making an out in his 3 column. He found it. ATN 7, CIN 6. Surprisingly undeterred, the Reds won the game in the ninth when 3 singles and 2 SB's added up to 2 runs, and Joe Sambito was able to get the final out with two Braves runners aboard, bailing out the unusually-shaky Eastwick.
