The San Francisco Giants edged the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium by the score of 3 to 2.
San Francisco scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Bill Buckner drew a walk. Buckner took off for second and slid in with a stolen base. Darrell Evans then doubled scoring the run. Overall San Francisco out-hit Cincinnati 7 to 4.
Gary Lavelle(3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Randy Moffitt earned his 9th save. Stan Bahnsen(1-2) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk.

Dock Ellis shutout San Francisco while allowing the Cincinnati bullpen a day-off at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds belted the San Francisco Giants by the count of 10 to 0.
Ellis(7-6) was very good in the win. He allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.40 to 4.02. Cincinnati banged out 9 on the night.
Ed Halicki(3-8) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings. The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 55-34. Pete Rose had a big evening at the plate. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 6th of the season) in the 1st inning, lined a single in the 3rd inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 8th inning. Cincinnati ended up with 10 hits for the game while San Francisco had 5.
Dave Goltz(12-4) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Tom Griffin(1-8) suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks. ----------------------------------------

Gary Nolan went the distance at Riverfront Stadium where the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 2 to 1.
Cincinnati brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning. San Francisco made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Nolan(9-4) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Jim Barr(4-8) was the losing pitcher. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 6 innings of work.
With this win, Cincinnati has a division leading 57-34 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss, the San Francisco ballclub's record is 35-56, worst in the division.
