Subject: results of Los Angeles @ San Diego.......

july 1

Gary Matthews smashed 2 homeruns and scored 3 times and Tommy John held San
Diego scoreless on just 3 hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the San
Diego Padres by a score of 6 to 0 at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Matthews enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He cracked a solo homerun in the
1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 17th of the season) in
the 5th inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 7th inning.  Los Angeles
rapped out 9 hits for the night.

For John(9-4) it was his 2nd shutout this year. The losing pitcher was Dave
Freisleben(5-8).  He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.

Mike Tomeo lamented, 'John was really aggressive today.  He kept coming after
our hitters.  Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after another
- like so many bowling pins!'

Burt Hooton(9-4) and Brent Strom(8-4) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with
Hooton and the Los Angeles Dodgers coming out on top of the San Diego Padres
2 to 1.

Hooton gave a fine effort for Los Angeles.  He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks in 7
innings.  San Diego threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tom Burgmeier earned his 14th save.

First baseman Dick Allen ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Nelson Briles
carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the San Diego Padres topped the
Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 6 to 1 at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Allen provided much of the offense.  He popped a two-run clout over the fence
in the 1st inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 10th
of the season) in the 8th inning.  San Diego totaled 7 on the night.

Briles(6-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 1 run.  The right-handed Briles lost his no-hit bid when Wayne
Garrett singled with two outs in the 7th inning.  Don Sutton(2-13) was the
loser.  He pitched 7 innings giving up only 5 hits and no walks.

San Diego now has a record of 47-40.  With the loss, the Los Angeles
ballclub's record is 40-47.

John Lowenstein had 2 base hits and Randy Jones took a no-hitter into the 7th
inning as the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score
of 3 to 0 at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Jones(13-7) was on top of his game.  He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks in
9 innings.  The left-handed Jones had his no-hit bid broken up by Gary
Matthews who singled with nobody out in the 7th inning.  Los Angeles was
retired without difficulty in the 9th.

Dick Ruthven(5-8) was the losing pitcher.  When questioned about his
counterpart after the game, Ruthven was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious
very early on that we were going to be in for a long night.  Jones brought
his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly.
He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
