The San Francisco Giants nipped the Atlanta Braves 5 to 4 at Fulton Cnty. Stadium in a hard fought contest.
Reggie Cleveland(8-6) pitched well in relief and was credited with the victory. He surrendered only 2 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Atlanta made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The loss was charged to Phil Niekro(13-9). Tom Austad was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!'

John Montefusco allowed Bob Mittleman to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Fulton Cnty. Stadium as the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 3 to 2.
Montefusco(7-10) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks. Atlanta had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Frank Lacorte(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings. Tom Austad was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

Rusty Staub hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI at Fulton Cnty. Stadium where the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 15 to 9.
It was a good day for Atlanta thanks to Staub. He smashed a two-run homer (his 12th of the season) in the 1st inning, laced a base-hit in the 5th inning and doubled which was good for two runs in the 7th inning. Atlanta provided plenty of action in the 5th inning with 6 runs on 7 hits. Atlanta simply wore out the San Francisco pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
The win was credited to Max Leon(3-1) who went 2 innings allowing 2 runs. Leon got relief help from Charlie Hough who gained credit for his 19th save. The losing pitcher was Ed Halicki(4-12). He allowed 13 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Jerry Royster hit a homerun and Gary Ross went the distance at Fulton Cnty. Stadium as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 4 to 2.
San Francisco was unable to claim the lead after Atlanta went ahead in the bottom of the 3rd inning plating an isolated run. San Francisco could do no damage in the 9th.
The victory went to Ross(10-6) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Rob Dressler(5-10) was the loser. He surrendered 6 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
