The Los Angeles Dodgers edged the St. Louis Cardinals in 12 innings at Busch
Stadium by the score of 3 to 2.

Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings.  Finally, Los
Angeles pulled the game out in the 12th inning.  Gary Matthews doubled.
Steve Garvey stepped into the batter's box and he lined a base-hit scoring
the run.  Los Angeles won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 13 hits to 8.

Marty Pattin(5-6) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Eddie
Solomon(0-1) was the loser in relief.  Los Angeles now has a record of 56-67.
Steve Dewing was unhappy with his club's recent performance.  'We can't keep
losing games' he said.  'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

In a game for the baseball purist, Bob Forsch(5-9) and Tommy John(10-8)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, St. Louis Cardinals finally emerged
victorious over Los Angeles Dodgers, 1 to 0.

St. Louis scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Jerry Mumphrey delivered a single.  Mumphrey swiped second base.  After an
out was recorded, Enos Cabell came to the plate and hit a single scoring the
run.  Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put down
the rally.

John Curtis earned his 1st save.  'We really needed this win' said Steve
Dewing.  'That first drink of water at the end of a drought sure does taste
good!'

In a tight game it was the Los Angeles Dodgers 6, the St. Louis Cardinals 4 at
Busch Stadium.

In the 4th inning Los Angeles scored 3 runs when they had 5 base hits.  They
ended up being the winning runs.  Los Angeles ended up with 11 hits for the
game while St. Louis had 8.

The win was credited to Dick Ruthven(8-12) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing
4 runs. Tom Murphy earned his 4th save.  Jerry Koosman(12-12) ended up with
the loss.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 3 and 2/3
innings.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Ruthven, 'I got burned
on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
