august 5 The Los Angeles Dodgers edged the St. Louis Cardinals in 12 innings at Busch Stadium by the score of 3 to 2. Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Los Angeles pulled the game out in the 12th inning. Gary Matthews doubled. Steve Garvey stepped into the batter's box and he lined a base-hit scoring the run. Los Angeles won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 13 hits to 8. Marty Pattin(5-6) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Eddie Solomon(0-1) was the loser in relief. Los Angeles now has a record of 56-67. Steve Dewing was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
