Padres and Expos split a rather “weird” series. Game 1: The first 5 Padres get hits against Don Stanhouse and 3 of them score (another thrown out at the
plate) to give SD an early lead. Montreal got it all
back in the bottom of the inning on homers by Schmidt and Johnson. They got the
winning run in the 2nd to win 4-3. The “weird” stat. SD
got 5 hits for the game (that’s right none after the first 5 guys in the
game). Montreal only got 2
more after the 2nd, both in the 7th inning. Game 2: Down 2-1
in the 6th, Padres get the winning rally in “weird”
fashion. With first and third,and
one out, Marty Perez tried to squeeze home Dave Winfield. Perez missed but
Winfield was able to steal home to tie the game. Perez then singled in the
runner who had moved up to 2nd. Padres hold on for 3-2 win. Montreal had just 2
hits in the game. Game 3: Up 3-2 into bottom of the 9th, Ron Reed
was called on to save the game for SD. 2 singles, a stolen base and a squeeze tied
the game and left the winning run on 3rd with just one out. Reed
managed to get out of the inning and SD won in the 12th, when Grubb
tripled with 2 outs and scored on a Chalk single. Game 4: Steve Rogers shut out the Padres 4-0. Nothing odd
there, but it was how they scored that was “weird”. Randy Jones, of near perfect control (43 walks in 271 ip before the game), pitched for the padres. The
first run scored on an error, the last 3 scored after 2 outs and nobody on,
when Jones either walked or hit a batter. 4th inning it was walk
then triple. The fifth saw a 2 out hbp followed by a
triple. The 7th saw a walk then double followed by yet another walk.
