There is nothing like coming home from a hard, difficult day at work and have your Expos play EXCELLENT baseball against the division leaders. It just goes to show you that at least once a season the sun shines on the dog’s ass. Expos beat Lockwood not once, but TWICE in the series.
Game 1 Cliff Johnson hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI at Shea Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by the count of 5 to 2.
Montreal came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs using 5 hits. Del Unser got things going when he laced a base-knock. Frank Duffy stepped up to the plate and he singled. Duffy took off for second and slid in with a stolen base. Duane Kuiper stepped in and he slapped a base-hit, and an error was also committed, knocking home two runners. Johnson came to the plate and doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Montreal finished with 11 hits while New York NL ended up with 7.
Don Hood(2-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Dale Murray earned his 24th save. Skip Lockwood(8-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk.
Game 2 Mike Schmidt touched them all and had 2 RBI and Frank Tanana racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 7 to 1.
Tanana(16-8) had a strong outing. He gave up just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Montreal totaled 13 on the night. The loss was charged to Mickey Lolich(4-10). He gave up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings of work.
Jon Fellows was impressed with Tanana and his 12 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
Game 3 Frank Duffy hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the reeling New York NL Mets by a score of 8 to 2.
Steve Rogers(13-11) delivered a fine performance for Rogers . He went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits and 2 walks. Montreal finished with 15 hits while New York NL ended up with 9.
The losing pitcher was Craig Swan(5-4). He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.
Game 4 In a good matchup it was the Montreal Expos 5, the slumping New York NL Mets 3 in 10 innings at Shea Stadium.
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Montreal was victorious in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Jorgensen got things rolling when he stroked a single. Darrel Chaney next to the plate and he laced a base-hit. One out later, Mike Schmidt came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. Jerry White came up and he laced a single scoring two teammates. Montreal had 9 hits for the afternoon.
The win went to Joe Kerrigan(2-4) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Dale Murray got the save, his 25th. Skip Lockwood(8-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.
The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 62-76. Jon Fellows was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.' |
