Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
The Cubs are totally outclassed and generally out-lucked as we visit Brooklyn, and the only surprise was that we managed to actually win one game. But it could have been closer.... Game 1: A routine loss in which we failed on 5 of 6 split card chances at hits, thus rendering BRN starter Carl Erskine nearly unhittable. Erskine tossed a complete game shutout, walking none and fanning 10 while the Dodger offense plated 6 runs off of helpless Chicago starter Bob Rush. The high point of the Cubbie day was when pitcher Joe Coleman, being used as a pinch-hitter, actually got our lone good split card (a triple). Coleman then not only declined to stretch the triple into a home run, he turned around and went back to second base! That has "Cubs" written all over it.... Game 2: Cubs lose by a score that makes it appear to be another rout (6-1). But wait: we had 2 80%+ runners gunned at the plate, our 3B blew 2 x plays in one inning thereby coughing up 2 unearned runs, and TWICE we wild-pitched or passed-balled a runner home from third base - with 2 outs. It takes a lot of effort, but often the Cubbie luck is so awful that we can play on even terms with a superior team yet still get blown out. Game 3: For one brief moment the planets all lined up and the Cubs were able to eke out a highly-unlikely win. Bubba Church went the extra mile, tossing 10 innings and being hit fairly hard (11 hits, 5 doubles, 1 gopher), but winning by the score of 5-4 by getting the Dodgers to strand almost as many runners as the Cubs stranded! Final score: 5-4. Church was unable to hold a late 4-3 lead, but a 10th inning sac fly enabled us to avert the sweep. Bubba excelled at the plate as he sometimes tends to do (.302 average), going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI. Alan |
