Subject: SLA at CIN
Dramatic opening day as Vic Raschi and Bud Podbelien lock up for a classic pitcher's duel. 1-0 Reds going into the top of the 9th, but the Browns manage to get the first three batters aboard, so it's bases loaded, nobody out, and Reds reliever Bob Miller is looking nervous out there. He gets Jim Dyck on a shallow fly out, and then Vern Stephens lofts a slightly further fly out for the second out, and pinch-runner Hank Foiles heads home on the tagup. Close play at the plate, a big cloud of dust, and........He's OUT! Jim Greengrass (now that's a baseball name!) guns him out to end it. Reds hold on for the win, 1-zip. The Reds took an early lead in the 2nd as Daryl Spencer hit a two-run homer (would have been a three-run homer had Ed Fitz Gerald not just fallen for the ol' hidden ball trick!). Reds continue to pound the ball, including belting three homers off of reliever Larry Jansen. It's 10-3 Cincy in a laugher. In the third game, Cincy starter Ken Raffenberger (didn't he play Cliff Clavin on Cheers??) allowed two runs to St. Louis while Browns hardluck Bob Feller was blanking the Reds through 6 innings. Feller gave up a leadoff homer to big Ted Kluszewski in the bottom of the 7th to narrow the gap to 2-1. Feller and Big Klu would meet up again in the bottom of the 8th, when he homered again, this time making it 4-2 and giving Cincy the win. Kluszewski was 3 for 3 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs (and 0 sleeves on his uniform). Sal Maglie has a fine outing in the finale, holding the Reds to just 2 runs in his 8 innings. Cincy rallies a little in the 9th, but Satchel Paige closes it out to earn his 25th save. 4-2, Brownies win.
