Bob Nieman had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Briggs Stadium as the Detroit Tigers
pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the New York AL Yankees by the count
of 4 to 3.
Detroit scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Pat Mullin opened up the rally as he
reached on an error scoring one more run. Harvey Kuenn followed and he lined
a base-hit making Detroit the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration. Detroit out-hit New York AL for the game, 13 hits to 7.
The winning pitcher was Al Aber(7-5) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Allie Reynolds(6-7) absorbed the loss in relief. Detroit's manager was all
smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty dim there for a while,
but our guys never gave up - and neither did our fans - they kept cheering us
on. What a sweet win!'
