Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals
The Cubs stupidly have been playing just a tad better lately, thus jeopardizing our well-deserved prime lottery seeding although we did for the umpteenth time demonstrate in game 1 how we elevate choking to an art form.... Game 1: CHN ace Bob Rush had a 4-0 lead in the 5th which was reduced to 5-2 after 8 innings. With a man on first and SLN down to their final out, Rush allowed a single followed by a 2-run triple that made the score 5-4. The CHN manager then summoned Ellis Kinder to face Stan Musial, and three pitches later Kinder delivered yet another "Perfect Sambito": one batter faced, one game-losing home run. Final score: 6-5. Game 2: Bob Miller was given a 3-1 lead and he & 2 relievers (including Kinder) somehow managed not to blow it. Final score: 3-2. Dutch Leonard appeared in his 36th game and earned just his first Hold of 1953 although he was hit hard, and Kinder registered his 16th save (should be closer to 30) by retiring the one batter he faced, with 2 outs and 2 runners on base in the bottom of the 9th. Game 3: The teams combined for 11 runs but just 3 were earned in Chicago's 9-2 win. Bubba Church continued to pitch well -- at least on the road -- tossing a complete game and permitting zero earned runs. The contest was close until St. Louis coughed up 6 unearned runs in the 7th inning. Ernie Banks smacked his first home run of 1953, and very likely the final one (#490) of his career. Alan |
