Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
The Cubs end our dismal season in dismal fashion and await our "reward" in the 1952 draft lottery.... Game 1: Our last breaks of 1953 occurred in this game: CHN gets outhit 13-6 but somehow pulls out a 5-2 win. The Dodgers stranded 13 runners, Bob Rush had just enough usage left to get his 12th win, and Ellis Kinder (save #17) didn't choke it away. The universe then returned to its customary alignment for the remainder of the series. Game 2: Brooklyn got 1000% of the breaks and the cards & dice were as vengeful as ever. The only surprise was that this game wasn't an even worse blowout. Final score: 13-2, with BRN stranding 11 more runners and the shutout being broken only in the 9th when Ernie Banks hit the final home run of his career. CHN starter Bob Schultz allowed 12 baserunners in less than 3 innings and things went downhill from there. Game 3: Carl Erskine fanned 13 Cubbies and would have had a shutout if his team would have made better decisions on bunt plays. Cubs blow a 2-0 lead due to one surgical inning, lose 3-2. We loaded the bases with nobody out in the 9th, then remembered "We are the Cubs" and failed to score. Game 4: Bubba Church had another good road start but got no run support even though we outhit the Dodgers. Final score: another 1-run loss (2-1). Four Cubs pitchers combined on a 5-hitter, a nice yet futile effort. Prospective N.L. batting champ Don Mueller also suddenly remembered that he is a Cub and went 1 for 7 in the series, which puts him well within striking range of his nearest competitors. Alan |
