slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
Jim McDonald(6-6) pitched a solid game.  He was reached for 6 hits and no
walks in 6 innings.  Boston had just 6 hits for the night. 
Bob Hooper gained credit for his 27th save.  Max Surkont(11-9) suffered the

One run was the difference at Fenway Park as the New York AL Yankees defeated
the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings 4 to 3.
The score was tied at 3 after nine.  New York AL won the hard fought contest
in the 11th inning.  Gil McDougald banged out a single.  Two outs later
Mickey Mantle came up and he doubled.  Hank Bauer then was walked
intentionally.  Red Wilson came up and he drew a walk to load the bases.  New
York AL totaled 8 hits on the night. 
Herm Wehmeier(5-2) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
Johnny Lindell(7-23) absorbed the loss in relief.  He pitched 3 and 2/3
innings giving up 3 hits and 4 walks.

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
Boston Red Sox rallied to top New York AL Yankees by the score of 6 to
5.
Boston had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs on 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Roy McMillan began the rally when
he drew a walk.  Del Wilber came next and he laced a single.  After another
out, Ted Williams came up and he stroked a one-base hit.  Johnny Groth
followed and he laced a base-hit.  Both teams totaled 10 hits on the night.
Marlin Stuart(7-3) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Johnny
Klippstein(8-5) was the loser in relief.  He pitched 2 and 2/3 innings giving
up 4 hits and 1 walk.
