Subject: 53 world series game 4
Aces Pierce and Roberts square off again in game 4. Each pitcher is hittable as the Sox get 2 off of Roberts in the first. Jim Busby tripled to lead off the game, Nellie Fox singled him home and Minnie Minoso singled Fox to third. Eddie Mathews hit a long sac fly and Fox scored for a 2-0 lead. The Dodgers came right back and tied the game on Al Rosen's 2 run homer in the first. The Dodgers got a solo homer by Gus Bell to take the lead in the second and the Sox countered with single runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Each pitcher settled down and the score remained 4-3 White Sox until the seventh inning. In the most controversial managing move in the series the Sox let Pierce face Sherm Lollar with first base open and Robin Roberts on deck and Lollar hit a HR 1-10 Fly out 11-20, and the ball just cleared the fence for a 2 run homer and a 5-4 Dodger lead. Roberts, showing the warrior he is would not be allowed to be taken out of the game and went to the ninth with over 125 pitches thrown. The Sox had 3, 4 and 5 hitters up and Roberts started the ninth with a strikeout of Minoso. That brought Mathews to the plate and he blasted a long drive to right, Furillo went back to the track (1-8 homerun to tie the game) and with his back to the fence reached up and grabbed the long fly for the second out of the innings. The Brooklyn faithful had a collective gasp. One more out to tie the series, Sam Mele was the next batter and he smoked a double down the leftfield line. The Brooklyn manager came to the mound to get Roberts but Robin wasn't having any of that, he refused to give up the ball, captain Pee Wee Reese came to the mound and talked the manager in to going back to the dugout without Roberts. Dee Fondy was the next hitter, he was 0-4 on the day, on a 2-1 pitch he lofted a lazy fly to left for the third out and the series is tied at two. |
