WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Willy Miranda robbed Gene Woodling of a base hit.

30,011 fans watched an exciting game at Wrigley Field.  The Chicago NL Cubs
topped the New York AL Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.
Chicago NL took the lead for good in the 7th inning with 3 runs using 5 hits.
Hank Sauer led off and started the attack as he delivered a single.  Andy
Pafko came next and he doubled.  Toby Atwell then slapped a base-hit.  Atwell
swiped second base.  Bill Serena came to the plate and lashed a single.
George Crowe continued the rally and doubled.  Willy Miranda next to the
plate and he drew a walk.  New York AL threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.
The win was credited to Bob Schultz(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing 2
runs. Willie Ramsdell recorded his 3rd save.  Bobby Hogue(0-1) was the losing
pitcher in relief.  Chicago NL scored big getting 3 runs off him in 2
innings.
New York AL's manager was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this
one, we just made one too many mistakes.  Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple
more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

Yogi Berra smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Wrigley Field as the New York
AL Yankees beat the Chicago NL Cubs 11 to 6.
Berra was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at
their team's expense.  He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 2nd inning,
popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 6th inning and lined a single
which scored a run in the 8th inning.  Chicago NL was out-hit by New York AL,
14 hits to 9.
Ned Garver(2-1) went 8 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Paul
Minner(0-3) was the loser.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 3 and 2/3 innings of
work.
The win by New York AL was very good news as they had been 1-9 of late.  Now
their seasonal record improves to 8-9.  With the loss, the Chicago NL
ballclub's record is 6-11.

Allie Reynolds went the distance as the New York AL Yankees beat the Chicago
NL Cubs by a score of 5 to 3.
In the 4th inning New York AL scored 3 runs with the help of 4 hits.  Gene
Woodling led off the inning for New York AL when he tripled.  Hank Bauer came
to the plate and stroked a one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, Gil
McDougald stepped in and he stroked a single.  McDougald took second on the
throw.  After another out, Reynolds stepped up to the plate and he doubled.
Chicago NL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.
The win was credited to Reynolds(3-1) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
Frank Hiller(0-3) ended up with the loss.  His ERA increased from 5.84 to
6.75 as he allowed 5 runs in 5 innings.
'Some losses are harder to take than others' Chicago NL's manager lamented
after the game.  'This was one of them.'
"Bring your friends, bring your children, and bring foot spray, because it's going to be funky."
