Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Braves are a much-improved team and deserve a lot of credit for that, but with the luck the Reds had this series, we'd have easily dropped 3 of 4 to a team of blind quadriplegics; the Reds defense has been indefensible, while the bullpen has reverted back to extremely offensive form. Speaking of fantastic luck, the Reds are now 5-0 in games NOT decided by a single run - but are 1-5 when the opportunity to choke is the greatest.... Game 1: A see-saw game in which the Reds tied it up in the top of the ninth, only to perform the requisite bullpen choke in the bottom of the inning. Doug Capilla's first major league start wasn't a bad one (7 IP, 2 ER), but some atrocious defense and brutal pen work from Jack Kucek sealed this one up. Vic Correll's solo home run in the ninth ended the 5-4 contest. Games 2-3: As bad as the Cincy defense & bullpen are, the offense became even worse for about 18 innings here: a pair of 1-0 losses. Tom Seaver allowed just 1 run (unearned, naturally) as the Reds outhit the Braves 7-4 and lost anyway in game 2 with Randy Lerch picking up the shutout. Then Phil Niekro continued his amazing 1977 season (0.26 ERA) as the fact that Ellis & Pentz combined on a 5-hitter wasn't sufficient to deter Atlanta. Game 4: Nothing bad lasts forever, and the Reds finally arrived for this series, whomping the Braves by the score of 11-1. Dave Goltz tossed a 3-hitter (but walked 7) and Cincy banged out 14 hits against Doyle Alexander & two relievers. The game didn't actually get out of hand until the very late innings, and the outcome was in doubt for much of the day. Atlanta's first 7 hitters in the lineup went a combined 0 for 22 against Goltz.
