Quote of day after this game: Dennis v. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Pittsburgh's manager after the game. 'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.' ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2004 10:24 AM Subject: [PreSmiley] Opening day @ Forbes Field
Not the biggest marquee matchup of starting pitchers (Fred Newman vs. Jack Sanford), but both hurlers acquitted themselves well for a while. Neither squad managed even one hit until the CHN fourth, when back to back singles by Beckert & Phillips were followed by a Billy Williams triple. Williams then scored on a sac fly to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. The Buccos used a triple of their own in the sixth to make the score 3-1, but Newman was able to strand Clemente at third base by retiring Stargell & Clendenon on strikeouts. One inning later, that old Cubbies bullpen magic returned with a vengeance: with two outs and a man on first, Newman was lifted in favor of Fergie Jenkins, to face pinch hitter Lee Maye. Maye wasted no time in tying the game, immediately launching a drive over the right field wall. But Frank Bertaina came on for Pittsburgh and had considerable difficulty locating home plate. Two walks (including one to the pitcher) after a single loaded the bases and the eventual winning run scored on Adolfo Phillips' sac fly. A ninth-inning single was the only other hit Jenkins permitted, and he was finally able to close out the game without further damage. Alan
