Subject: Cubs @ Pirates

This Chicago pitching staff is a brutal massacre waiting to happen (not to suggest that's any big surprise, however), especially with HAL running the bullpen in home games & autoplay.  In this series, no game was decided by more than 2 runs.

Game 2: One big inning cost the Cubs this time: winning 3-2 in the fourth inning, Dick Ellsworth imploded and (with help from Bob Buhl) gave up a 5-spot.  The Cubs battled back gamely, but wound up on the short end of the 7-6 score.  The Pirates left 11 runners on base, otherwise the score would have truly reflected how awful the Cubs pitching/luck was.

Game 3: A reversal of game 2, in that it was the Cubs turn to outstrand the Pirates by a mile, yet win the game thanks to competent pitching for a change.  Competent, and then some: Sonny Siebert tossed a 2-hitter, fanned 10, and won 3-1.  A Clemente homer was the only tally for the Pirates.  Bob Veale was nearly as good as Siebert, at least in terms of earned runs allowed (zero).

Game 4: The calendar may now read 1966 instead of 1967 but nothing has changed in the CHN bullpen: another monster choke (Fergie is now 2 for 2 in blown saves) cost us another game.  Curt Simmons was spotted a 4-run lead in the first* (naturally, that would be all the Cubs would score all day) and had fought bravely through 5+ innings, and Jim Owens held down the fort until the eighth.  Enter Fergie, to give up the two critical runs to hand his team another 1-run loss.  Jose Pagan's two-out double plated the tying & winning runs in the eighth.

*  The road team has to love games where their pitcher BATS before he takes the mound.
