The Tigers scored 3 runs on 3 hits in the first inning with a Kaline grounder and a Norm Cash 2-run HR but were only able to muster two singles the rest of the way.
Roger Maris homered in his first KC at-bat and Jim Gosger got a $single in the fourth to make it close. A leadoff double by Clay Dalrymple in the 9th threw a scare into the Detroit squad but Fred Gladding and Hal Woodeshick were able to retire Allen, Wagner, and Maris to seal the 3-2 victory.
Earl Wilson (1-0) earned the victory and Mike McCormick absorbs the loss.
