For those of you in both leagues, note that the changes mentioned below will affect only Pre-Smiley. ================================================= For the second time in league history, the maximum roster size & draft limits must be reduced. If not immediately, then certainly before 1950. Drafting up to a limit of 30 players per team requires a total of 420 available players (not counting the Undraftable, very low usage players). By my count, the total number of available *draftable* players for the next 3 seasons are: 1951: 433 1950: 406 1949: 392 By 1949, even drafting up to a limit of only 28 players, we will use up every single available player. Regardless of the overall roster limit, the number of active players will remain at 25. There is another solution (albeit a drastic one) which is to permanently disband one team from each league. In Smiley, there are 4 teams permanently unowned (CAA, CLA, HON, PHN) which is part of the reason we don't have this problem in that league; in Pre-Smiley there are only 2 unowned teams currently (CLA and PHN). If we had just 12 teams instead of 14, that would require only 360 draftable players even picking 30 per team. *IF* we choose to disband teams, it would be easy to pick the A.L. team to go -- the one which is currently unowned (DEA) after 1952. As for the N.L.......? ================================================= It is likely that at some point there will have to be limits on the number of innings a team can retain following a season and another (higher) limit that a team can possess after a draft or during a season. With the increasing scarcity of players, it is not desirable to have some teams with 1800+ IP going into a draft, while others have far less than 1000 IP. 1500-1600 is easily enough to get through a 154 game season. The biggest hardship (for some teams) would be having to cut useful pitchers in order to comply with the limit. This would likely be a very temporary hardship, because teams would no longer be able to accumulate as many IP to begin with. If limits are applied, the pre-draft limit would probably be around 1400-1500 and the post-draft and in-season limit would be no more than 1700. The limits would not factor in the extra usage that some players get, it would be based on exactly what appears on the pitchers' cards. So a 70 IP pitcher who can actually get 175 IP would be counted only at 70. ================================================= To help alleviate the usage shortage, it is possible that the rule affecting extra usage for certain (bad) players will be modified to allow even more usage for those players.
