Subject: the Amazin' Mets?

The Mets, who got no-hit by Bob Veale in the first game of the season, get incredibly lucky in sweeping the Reds. The Mets 3 and 4-rated fielders somehow fielded alright while the Reds 2-rated fielders seemed to not get to hit balls just at the wrong time. This is just as odd as the lowly A's sweeping my Tigers during the 1967 pennant race.

GAME ONE       NY 8 CINCY 6
Ken Boyer smacked a 3-run HR in the first to stake the Mets to an early lead. The Reds came back and took the lead at 6-5 going into the ninth inning. A Boyer two-run double followed by a Jerry Grote run-scoring single gave the Mets the final margin of victory. Bill McCool was the goat for Cincy, giving up 3 runs in one inning of work. The Cincy pitchers also walked 9 batters.

GAME TWO      NY  7  CINCY 3
The Mets got on Chris Short early and never really let up as he gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in seven innings of work. Don Lock and Gene Oliver homered for the Mets and Deron Johnson and Rocky Colavito homered for the Reds. Jack Fisher pitched seven strong innings for the victory.

GAME THREE  NY 12  CINCY 9
This one was the most unbelievable game as Cincy rocked starter Bob Friend to gain an 8-1 lead after two innings. The Mets tied it in the seventh at 9-9 and won it in the twelfth inning with three runs on a Chuck Hiller fielders choice, a Don Lock single, and an Ed Kranepool sac fly. Don Nottebart was the losing pitcher. Homering for NYN were Don Lock, Ken Boyer (twice) and Ed Kranepool (twice). Johnson, Rose and Pavletich homered for the Reds. Another interesting thing is that both teams left a total of only 9 runners on base.

GAME FOUR   NY  10 CINCY 6
The Mets jumped all over Milt Pappas for an early 8-2 lead and coasted to the victory. The Reds had four unearned runs as errors by Coker, Cardenas, and Helms cost them dearly. Cleon Jones was the main hero for the Mets as he blasted a third-inning 3-run homerun. Tom Satriano chipped in with 3 rbi's. Al Jackson went six innings, giving up two runs, for the victory. Cincy highlights consisted of homeruns by Rocky Colavito and Tommy Helms.
