Game 1 Mike Schmidt cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 5 to 3 at Wrigley Field.
Chicago NL was unable to claim the lead after Montreal went ahead in the 6th inning plating an isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. Overall Montreal out-hit Chicago NL 12 to 7.
The victory was credited to Frank Tanana (12-8) who went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs. Elias Sosa earned his 1st save. Rick Reuschel (13-13) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
Game 2 Andre Dawson blasted 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago NL Cubs 9 to 3 at Wrigley Field.
Dawson had a big day with his bat. He cracked a solo homerun in the 2nd inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his 14th of the season) in the 6th inning. Montreal kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings.
The win went to Vida Blue (11-10) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Ray Burris (4-18) took the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.
Montreal continued their winnings ways improving their record to 64-44. They are 9-1 in their last ten games. With the loss, the Chicago NL ballclub's record is 42-66, worst in the division.
Game 3 At Wrigley Field the Chicago NL Cubs scored 4 runs in the 8th inning and outscored the Montreal Expos 4 to 1.
Chicago NL did all the necessary damage in the 8th inning as they scored 4 runs on 5 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Ken Reitz who brought a roar from the partisan Wrigley Field fans when he doubled plating two runs. The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning.
Willie Hernandez (2-7) got the win allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Bruce Sutter gained credit for his 18th save. The loss was charged to Larry Christenson (7-7).
Chicago NL now has a record of 43-66. With an impressive recent record of 8-2, Montreal hopes this will only be an isolated loss - followed by another nice run.
Game 4 19,590 fans watched an exciting game at Wrigley Field. The Montreal Expos put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 6th inning and topped the Chicago NL Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Don Stanhouse (5-6) delivered a fine performance for Montreal . He was reached for 4 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Steve Foucault recorded his 25th save. Mike Krukow (5-10) took the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
