Game 1 48,009 fans were treated to a fine game at Busch Stadium as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The streaking Montreal Expos won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
The game was won by Montreal with a run in the 8th inning. Gary Carter hit a bases-empty home run (his 29th of the season). St. Louis threatened in the 9th but Montreal was able to put down the rally.
The win went to Larry Christenson (9-7) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Steve Foucault got the save, his 29th. Rollie Fingers (6-7) took the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 2 innings.
For Montreal , the victory kept their winning streak on the march.
Game 2 48,790 fans watched an exciting game at Busch Stadium. The seemingly unstoppable Montreal Expos topped the St. Louis Cardinals by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
Montreal came up with 1 run in the top of the 7th inning. Andre Dawson drew a walk. Dawson took his lead and swiped second. Alan Bannister then delivered a single scoring the run. Montreal and St. Louis each finished the night with 6 hits.
Don Hood (5-1) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Steve Foucault was credited with his 30th save. Jerry Koosman (15-10) was the loser. Despite the loss, he struckout 11 Montreal batters in 8 innings.
Game 3 Ellis Valentine slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Steve Rogers had a strong outing at Busch Stadium as the seemingly unstoppable Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 7 to 3.
Valentine had a big day with his bat. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in the 5th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 22nd of the season) in the 8th inning. For the game Montreal out-hit St. Louis 8 to 4.
Rogers (17-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2 runs. Rogers got help from Joe Kerrigan who earned his 4th save. Eric Rasmussen (14-8) was the loser. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
With the win, Montreal continues their noteworthy winning streak.
Game 4 The red-hot Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5 to 2 at Busch Stadium.
Montreal scored 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning. The highlight belonged to Ivan Dejesus who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he slapped a single plating two runs. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Frank Tanana (15-9) went 5 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Steve Foucault gained credit for his 31st save. Bob Forsch (10-8) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.
The winning ways continue for Montreal . They now have a record of 10-0 in recent days. With the loss, the St. Louis ballclub's record is 68-58. |
