august 8 The San Diego Padres edged the Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Stadium by the score of 2 to 1. The deciding run was scored by San Diego in the bottom of the 8th. Bill Almon laced a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Gene Tenace came to the plate and hit a single scoring the run. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. The victory was credited to Ron Reed(4-5) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Mike Garman(4-6) was charged with the loss in relief. Los Angeles won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Davey Lopes got things going when he stroked a base-hit. Lopes was running on the next pitch and he stole second. John Hale then doubled which scored a run. Dusty Baker was up next and he lined a single. After another out, Ron Cey stepped up to the plate and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. San Diego had 12 hits in the game while Los Angeles had 8, but Los Angeles had the more timely hits. Rawly Eastwick(4-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing 1 run. Eastwick got relief help from Mike Garman who gained credit for his 12th save. The loss was charged to Ron Reed(4-6) in relief. Billy Vanson was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. Los Angeles scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 6 runners on 6 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Ron Cey who deflated the crowd as he belted a three-run homer (his 30th of the season). Los Angeles totaled 12 on the afternoon. Pete Broberg(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Paul Lindblad(9-9) ended up with the loss in relief. After the game, it took a long while before Mike Tomeo emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Los Angeles locker room.'
