Subject: Reds @ Expos
A smattering of late-inning heroics against the Montreal bullpen in the first two games were just about the only breaks the Reds got in the series, but it was enough to avoid the sweep.... Game 1: Starters Paul Moskau & Larry Christenson were unimpressive, but the score was just 3-2 after 6 innings. The Reds got a couple of two-out RBIs in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, but Manny Sarmiento gave both runs right back in the bottom of the inning (until this game, Sarmiento had faced over 100 batters in road games in his career, allowing a total of ZERO earned runs). Foucault came in to close out Cincy in the ninth but allowed 4 hits & a walk, and the Reds won 7-5. Game 2: Steve Rogers had everything going his way for 8 innings (2 hits allowed and zero runs) and Montreal took a 2-0 lead into the ninth. Rogers was lifted for Foucault after a leadoff double, and George Foster promptly tied the contest with a home run. In the tenth, three Montreal relievers each permitted an extra-base hit and the Reds eked out an unlikely 4-2 win. Game 3: Seaver & Tanana combined to allow the opposition just 9 hits, but wildness (particularly on Seaver's part) was costly in the Reds 3-1 loss. Down 2-1 early, Seaver gave up nothing more until the MON seventh, when he allowed three consecutive walks, the last of which forced in a run. Milt Wilcox then fanned Schmidt & Carter with the bases loaded, but the Reds could muster no late-inning offense on this day. Game 4: The breaks all went one direction today, as Vida Blue could do no wrong (a 3-hit shutout) and Dave Goltz, plagued as he often is by a ridiculous number of blown x-plays, could do very little right. Final score: 7-0. All of the Expos 9 hits were singles, but they strung them together to produce the maximum amount of damage against Goltz and the suddenly-hapless Cincy defense. Alan |
