Subject: Cubs @ Reds

We prove once again in game 1 that NOBODY chokes like the Cubbies, but instead of collapsing under the crushing weight of our brutal luck as we normally do, the Cubs come back and win the next two (!)....

Game 1: No other team in history loses games like this on a regular basis.  The Cubs were having some problems scoring runs coming into the week, so today we scored 10.  Chicago got some surgery in our favor when we strung together 6 consecutive singles to open the second inning and took a 5-0 lead.

Naturally we gave some runs back immediately, but that wouldn't matter because we quickly scored 5 more.  With the score 10-2 in the 6th it was CHN starter Tommy Byrne's turn to leap up on the operating table.  But Ellis Kinder extinguished the threat after Byrne reduced our lead to 10-5.

Unfortunately, Kinder returned to far more typical form in the 7th.  The keys: two critical blown x-plays that led to 100% of the runs the Cubs allowed; a walk drawn ON HIS OWN CARD by a '1' hitting pitcher (being allowed to bat only because his team was trailing by so much).  And, for the finishing touch, a Grand Slam by Duke Snider.  Final score: 11-10.  CHN catcher Walker Cooper had an even bigger day at the plate than Snider, but it counted for nothing in the end.

Game 2: Paul Minner dodged bullets and wound up with a complete game 5-hitter, his first win of 1951, and an ERA that temporarily stands at 0.56.  Cubs win, 3-0.  Our only offense against CIN starter Ken Raffensberger came on a pair of home runs by Hal Jeffcoat and Randy Jackson.

Game 3: Ken Johnson & Monk Dubiel got the Reds to strand 11 runners while ex-Red Roy Smalley came through with a game-winning 2-run homer in the CHN 7th as the Cubs eked out an unlikely 3-2 win.  Cincy starter Ewell Blackwell was tough to hit otherwise, though a bit wild.  Don Mueller tripled and scored our initial run in the first, thus giving him more clutch hits (1) already in 1951 than he had in all of 1952.

Alan
