Subject: Mets take 3 of 4 from Buccos

Reggie Smith hits a three-run dinger and Jay Johnstone follows with a solo shot of his own in a 5 run inning that is all Nino Espinosa needs.

Sixto Lezcano goes 5 for 5 and Keith Hernandez and Johnny Bench chip in with home runs.  Gossage makes it a little scary in the 9th but the Mets hang on.

Hopes for the sweep are stoked when Mike Tyson (!) ties the game with a home run, but Bill Robinson smashes a 2-run shot off Warren Brusstar for the 4-2 Pirates win.

Going into the 9th it's 2-0 Pirates and it looks like a split is in the offing - then Mazzilli homers, Guerrero doubles, Lezcano singles to tie the game and after another single, Hernandez gets the game-winning hit.  One of the biggest wins of the season for the Mets.

In a great finish the New York NL Mets came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 2 at Three
Rivers Stadium.

New York NL had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
using 5 hits.  Lee Mazzilli kicked off the action when he smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 7th of the season).  After an out was recorded,
Mario Guerrero stepped up to the plate and he doubled.  Sixto Lezcano then
lashed a single bringing in another run.  Jay Johnstone stepped in and he
lined a one-base hit.  One out later, Keith Hernandez came up and he slapped
a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning.  New York NL managed 10 in
their victory.

Skip Lockwood(4-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Rich Gossage
recorded his 29th save.  Gene Garber(4-5) was the loser in relief.  He
allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Jon Fellows was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at
bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead.  But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'
