Reggie Smith hits a three-run dinger and Jay Johnstone follows with a solo shot of his own in a 5 run inning that is all Nino Espinosa needs. Sixto Lezcano goes 5 for 5 and Keith Hernandez and Johnny Bench chip in with home runs. Gossage makes it a little scary in the 9th but the Mets hang on. Hopes for the sweep are stoked when Mike Tyson (!) ties the game with a home run, but Bill Robinson smashes a 2-run shot off Warren Brusstar for the 4-2 Pirates win. Going into the 9th it's 2-0 Pirates and it looks like a split is in the offing - then Mazzilli homers, Guerrero doubles, Lezcano singles to tie the game and after another single, Hernandez gets the game-winning hit. One of the biggest wins of the season for the Mets. Jon Fellows New York Mets 1976 NL East Champions "Meet the Mets. Step right up and greet the Mets ..." Jon Fellows was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.' |
