The METS come crashing down as the Cardinals impressive starting staff shuts them down completely. The Mets made 6 errors to the Cardinals 1 and grounded into 4 dp's while the Cardinals avoided any dp's.

Jim Bunning carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Dick Groat had 2 base

hits and 2 RBI at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New

York NL Mets 3 to 2.

 

Bunning(4-0) gave St. Louis a solid outing.  He didn't give up much, just 3

hits and 3 walks in 9 innings and gave up 2 homeruns seeing his ERA drop from

3.48 to 3.15.  The right-handed Bunning lost his chance for a no-hitter when

Chuck Hiller singled with two outs in the 6th inning.  New York NL made it

exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

 

Al Jackson(2-2) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 7

hits and no walks.

Catcher Tim McCarver smacked 3 triples and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis

Cardinals beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 8 to 4.

 

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance

provided by McCarver.  He tripled knocking in a run in the 2nd inning,

tripled in the 4th inning and tripled plating two runs in the 5th inning.

New York NL was out-hit by St. Louis, 12 hits to 8. 

 

The victory went to Bob Gibson(3-2) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4

runs. Rick Wise(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed St. Louis 6 runs in

4 innings of work. 

 

With this win, St. Louis has a 8-8 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  With

this loss, New York NL has a 6-4 record of late, 10-6 overall.

Larry Jackson(2-2) went 8 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jack Fisher(2-3)

was the loser.  The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 9-8.  With the
