april 17 Bob Shaw pitched 9 strong innings at Memorial Stadium where the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York AL Yankees by the score of 6 to 1. Baltimore came up with 5 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Baltimore finished with 10 hits in the victory. Shaw(1-0) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Al Downing(0-2) was the loser. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work. New York AL's manager lamented, 'Shaw was really aggressive today. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
