Subject: Cubs @ Giants
The Cubs were heading for another 0%-of-the-breaks series, when the unthinkable happened in game 3.... Game 1: Cubs play just well enough to lose, as usual. Despite gathering just 3 hits all day against Bobby Bolin and two relievers, Chicago makes it close and loses by the score of 3-2. Game 2: Losing by one run is hardly atypical, but it's HOW we do it that makes us what we are (and have been since Pre-Smiley began): today, the teams traded one-run innings for most of the day, the score winding up tied 3-3 as we went into the ninth. The Cubs plated a pair of runs in the top of the frame to take a 5-3 lead. Then with - of course - Fergie Jenkins on the mound: First batter: gopher ball Second batter: gopher ball Two batters later (with Jim Owens now pitching): gopher ball, game over. Game 3: The ending to game two was, unfortunately, all-too-believable for what few Cubs fans there may be; NOBODY is going to believe what happened in game 3. Sonny Siebert started for Chicago and was doing the usual thing - getting zero breaks, watching the opposition get hits in near-empty columns, seeing Stupid Ballpark Tricks that only work in favor of one team (the home team), seeing the other guys never miss a split.... IOW, the usual. The Giants had an 8-0 lead after 4 innings and Juan Marichal had a no-hitter going until the seventh. Just another routine day for the Cubbies. In the seventh, Jose Cardenal led off with a single, took off for second with an 85% chance of success.... and got nailed. Adolfo Phillips followed a few batters later with a 3-run homer that would have been a grand slam, but the CS couldn't possibly matter with the score THIS far apart. The Big Tease continued into the 8th: two singles opened the inning, and were followed by two homers: the score is 8-7, and finally Marichal is lifted (what about that CS NOW, huh?). Somehow, in the ninth, Chicago pushed across FIVE MORE runs, all against Frank Linzy, and Fergie didn't allow a run (though he sure tried) in the bottom of the inning, and the Cubs had come from being down 8-0 to a 12-8 win. Blowing 8-0 leads is not uncommon (for me), but a comeback like this is once-in-a-lifetime. It could mean the difference between 99 and 100 losses in 1966!!! Alan |
