Subject: Tigers stumble at home versus the Twins.........

In FTF action the Tigers are humbled by the strong Twins pitching staff and slugger Harmon Killebrew. Revenge will be had in week 6 however.  

 

 

GAME ONE

 

Twins........... 0 1 0  0 3 0  1 0 2  -  7 11  3

Tigers.......... 1 0 0  3 0 0  1 0 0  -  5  7  1

 

Third baseman Harmon Killebrew cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the

Minnesota Twins outscored the Detroit Tigers 7 to 5.

 

Minnesota came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring

2 runs on 2 hits.  Ted Uhlaender led off and started the rally when he lined

a one-base hit.  Killebrew stepped up next and he cleared the fences for a

two-run home run (his 5th of the season).  Minnesota had 11 hits overall,

while Detroit had 7. 

 

The win went to Jim Merritt(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Al

Worthington earned the save, his 4th.  The losing pitcher was Ron Kline(0-2)

in relief.

Mudcat Grant had 2 base hits at Tiger Stadium as the Minnesota Twins beat the

Detroit Tigers by the count of 5 to 4.

 

Minnesota scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  After two outs Ed

Charles cracked a solo homerun (his 3rd of the season).  Minnesota had 10

hits overall, while Detroit had 7. 

 

Grant(3-1) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Dwight Siebler

earned his 1st save.  Ron Kline(0-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.

 

Joe Adcock blasted a pinch grand slam in the fifth inning, providing the lone Tiger highlight.

strong outing as the Minnesota Twins outscored the Detroit Tigers 7 to

1.

 

Minnesota brought 3 runs across the plate in the 4th inning when they had 3

base hits.  Harmon Killebrew led off and started the rally when he laced a

base-hit.  Jimmie Hall stepped up to the plate and he tripled bringing in a

run.  Zoilo Versalles then hit a deep fly plating another run.  One out

later, Whitfield came to the plate and single-handedly provided the offense

with a solo home run (his 3rd of the season).  Minnesota had 11 hits for the

afternoon. 

 

The victory was credited to Kaat(2-1) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.

Earl Wilson(3-1) was given the loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners

giving up 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
