Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
Even as our customary (at home) sweep by the Dodgers was in progress, the Cubs visited the friendly confines of Ebbets Field -- and found them to actually *be* somewhat friendly.... Game 1: Bob Rush threw 149 pitches, and most of them must have been good ones because he limited the mighty Dodgers to just 7 hits and 1 run. Final score: 3-1. The Cubs had hits galore against Robin Roberts but established our series-long pattern of hitting into timely GIDPs at almost every possible opportunity. Roy Smalley's 2-run single in the second inning proved to be the difference in the outcome. Game 2: HAL had his best scalpel sharpened and ready for poor Johnny Schmitz, as the Dodgers sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning and scored 5 times. Chicago would end up outhitting Brooklyn today but the fact that BRN had a 10-0 advantage in walks plus that instant 5-0 lead meant there was no chance of a comeback -- though we tried valiantly anyway. Final score: 9-4. Game 3: After 2 games of missing every HR split possible, the Cubs launched 4 off of the Preacher and won by the score of 4-3 in 10 innings after choking away a 3-1 lead. Three more critical GIDPs helped ensure very few runners were aboard when the CHN homers came around. Ted Gray had one of his best outings of the season in what should be a merely routine stat line (9 IP, 3 runs, 11 baserunners) and also fanned 12 Dodgers. Eddie Stanky's second longball of the game provided the winning margin in the 10th. Alan |
