I hated the Reds.  I hate the Reds.  I will always hate the Reds.

Not Alan, though.  He’s a very nice man.

Subject: [ SmileyList ] 1977 NLCS update: Reds take 2-0 lead over Expos

In a pair of games played online, the Cincinnati Reds won by the scores of 7-3 and 5-1 at Riverfront Stadium.  The series now moves to Montreal , where the Expos will be looking to stay alive.  The two games at Cincy were quite a bit closer than they may appear, with the contests turning on just a few key plays....

In game 1, the Reds got to Steve Rogers early and survived an unusual amount of wildness (6 walks) from Tom Seaver.  Ken Griffey's two-run homer gave Cincinnati a 3-0 lead in the third, while the Expos stranded the bases loaded in their third, and left two more in scoring position in the fourth.

Montreal shortstop Ivan DeJesus committed errors on consecutive plays in the CIN fifth, permitting two unearned runs to cross the plate and giving the Reds a 6-0 lead.  The Expos came back in the seventh when their first four batters reached base, three of them eventually scoring, to cut Cincy's lead in half.  The scoring was concluded when Cesar Geronimo lofted a solo home run off of reliever Bill Atkinson.

Seaver (1-0) went the distance, allowing 5 hits and fanning 6 men.

----------------------------------

Frank Tanana and Dave Goltz were the Game 2 starters, and both were fairly sharp early.  Both teams stranded runners in scoring position in the first, and the Reds broke on top in the second on back-to-back doubles by Ken Griffey & Bill Melton.  The Expos tied the game in the fourth on Gary Carter's RBI groundout, following singles by Mike Schmidt & Roger Freed.

The critical blow (to say the least) came in the Reds' sixth.  Two walks and a single leading off the inning loaded the bases with nobody out.  Bill Melton then proceeded to hit into the routine 5-2-3 DP, leaving runners at second & third with two outs.  Eighth-place hitter Ron Pruitt was walked intentionally, and Goltz took an early shower.  Super-zoid pinch hitter Jerry Hairston was yanked wihtout facing a pitch after Montreal switched to righthander Joe Kerrigan, at which point John Stearns calmly stepped up and delivered the pinch-hit Grand Slam.

That was all of the scoring for the day, as Manny Sarmiento worked three effective innings for the save, with Goltz getting the win despite his rather brief outing.

Alan
