Subject: ALCS games 1 & 2
In a series being autoplayed by mutual consent of the owners involved, the Boston Red Sox have taken a 2-0 lead over the Kansas City Royals, sweeping both games at home. The series now moves to Kansas City for the final contests. The 1977 ALCS web page is here: Game 1: J.R. Richard, with help from two relievers, outdueled Dennis Leonard as Boston won by the score of 4-3. The Royals took advantage of Richard's wildness in the fourth, scoring a run on three walks and a double, but stranded the bases loaded (which Boston had done just half an inning earlier). The Sox took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jack Brohamer doubled home Carlton Fisk & Fred Lynn. The lead was extended to 4-1 when Bernie Carbo delivered a two-run homer in the Boston seventh. Bill Laxton relieved J.R. in the eighth and retired the side uneventfully, but ran into trouble in the ninth when Al Cowens led off with a double. The next two batters went down on flyouts, but Bob Stanley took over for Laxton after Darrell Porter singled Cowens to third. Stanley immediately balked in a run then allowed a Hal McRae double, making the score 4-3. Stanley finally got the save when Frank White grounded out to end the game. ------------------------ Game 2: Dennis Eckersley allowed just three baserunners and one run in 7 innings, while HAL allowed Paul Splittorff to absorb a 14-hit beating in a game Boston won 10-5. The Red Sox tallied at least one run in every inning from the second through the sixth, but Splittorff endured until the score was 7-1. The Royals put 4 runs on the board off of Bob Stanley in the final two frames, but the game was well in hand by that time. Ninth-place hitter Don Baylor was the batting star for Boston, going 3 for 4 with a home run & 5 RBI to pace the 16-hit attack. The series will conclude tomorrow with games 3-5 in Kansas City. Alan |
