Subject: NLCS update

The Reds arrived in Montreal only to find that Olympic Stadium had been demolished and replaced by Coors Field.  Thirty runners crossed home plate in two games, as quality pitching was in short supply (with some notable exceptions in game 3)....

A complete report of the slugfests can be found here:

Game 3: This one got out of hand early, but the real excitement didn't occur until much later.

Don Stanhouse got the nod to take the ball for the home team, but when ten Cincinnati batters had come to the plate and the first inning still wasn't over, Stanhouse was dragged from the mound.  Three blown x-plays by the MON defense (all hits) combined with four Stanhouse walks gave the Reds a 7-0 lead before many in the crowd of 46,583 even got their seats warm.

Little did the Reds suspect they would get no more runs today (and only 2 more hits).... or that they would actually NEED more runs.

Dock Ellis was in a charitable mood, and after the first three Expos batters came to the plate in the first, the 7-0 lead had quickly been reduced to 7-3.  Six batters into the game, the Expos were batting .833 and only a GIDP saved Ellis from blowing the entire lead in half an inning.

When he allowed a 3-run homer to Gary Carter in the third, his manager finally got the idea that this wasn't Dock's day, and Milt Wilcox & Jack Kucek proceeded to hold Montreal scoreless for the next 5.2 innings.  Down to the final inning of their season, the Expos managed a pair of doubles against Joe Sambito to tie the game at 7, then Manny Sarmiento escaped a bases-loaded situation (after his two walks loaded them to begin with) to send the game into extras.

With the Cincy pen nearly vacated, Gene Pentz came on in the eleventh, accidentally retired the first batter, walked the next two, then Mike Schmidt sent the crowd home happy when he deposited Pentz's 3-2 pitch into the left field stands for the 10-7 win - completing one of the biggest comebacks (and biggest chokes) in Smiley postseason history.

The Expo bullpen - Kerrigan, Hood, Atkinson, Foucault & Sosa - combined for 10.1 IP, 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 BB & 9 K, a feat that even overshadowed Schmidt's 6 RBI performance.

-----------------------------------------

Game 4: The Reds hoped that Tom Seaver would stop the bleeding, and Montreal hoped for the same from Steve Rogers.  Neither fared very well, with a combined line of:

10.2 IP, 20 hits, 9 runs, 6 BB, 9 K

The Reds got ahead early, and although the Expos kept cutting the lead, Cincy always built it back up and escaped with a 9-4 win behind 4 hits apiece for Geronimo & Griffey.  Today, the Reds relievers left their matches in the bullpen, and some poor defense in the eighth allowed 3 unearned insurance runs.

Congratulations to the Expos on another fine season, but they have not (lucky for us) been able to break that playoff jinx yet.  :-)

Alan
