St. Louis Browns put up a valiant effort, but ultimately lose 2 out of 3 in a ferociously contested series. Ed Lopat and NY's Herm Wehmeier put up a bunch of goose eggs in the opener, going 6 and 7 shutout innings respectively. This one would go to the 12th inning still tied 0-0 (or nil-nil, if you will). Reliever Spec Shea, after already logging 4 shutout innings of his own, gets touched by leadoff hits from Barney McCoskey and Bob Cerv, then gives up a single to Bobby Young to allow the first run of the game (Ol' Spec not fond of players whose first name begins with the letter 'B'). That would also be the LAST run of the game, as Satchel Paige closes it out and puts up 5+ innings of shutout pitching himself. 1-0 Browns. Browns pull ahead 4-2 after the 4th inning in the second game, but the proud Yankees will battle back, scoring in the 6th and sending the game into extras by scratching out a run in the 9th. In the bottom of the 10th, Joltin' Joe Dimaggio singled, and Yogi Berra doubled to put the Yankees in position to win it. However, Bobby Avila botched a bunt and popped into a double play. With two down and a man in scoring position, it was up to lantern-jawed Hank Bauer. Bauer, always a clutch player, cracked a double to win it, 5-4, for New York. Three hits for Bauer in this game. Spec Shea avenges his defeat in the opener, earning his 5th win of the year. With another 4-2 advantage in the middle of the game, the Browns were getting a sense of 'deja vu all over again' in the finale. NY scratched out a run to make it 4-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, and sure enough, Sal "The Barber" Maglie gives up a three-run bomb to Johnny "The Big Cat" Mize (man, GREAT nicknames in this series!) and New York goes crazy on the walk-off hit. 6-4 Yanks win.
