St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 5 hits. Derrel Thomas opened up the inning nicely when he lashed a single. After an out was recorded, Wayne Cage stepped in and he ripped a base-knock. Garry Templeton then stroked a one-base hit knocking in a run. Ted Simmons followed and he lined a base-hit scoring one more run. George Hendrick stepped into the box and smacked a single making St. Louis the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. St. Louis out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 13 hits to 7. The victory went to Mark Littell(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Kent Tekulve(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Simmons noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!' |
