In a dramatic ending, the St. Louis Cardinals staged a comeback win over the
Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 4 to 3.

St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs on 5 hits. Derrel Thomas opened up the inning nicely when he
lashed a single. After an out was recorded, Wayne Cage stepped in and he
ripped a base-knock. Garry Templeton then stroked a one-base hit knocking in
a run. Ted Simmons followed and he lined a base-hit scoring one more run.
George Hendrick stepped into the box and smacked a single making St. Louis
the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. St. Louis out-hit
Pittsburgh for the game, 13 hits to 7.

The victory went to Mark Littell(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Kent Tekulve(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'Now there is a lesson
in perseverance for you,' Simmons noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there
for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades!
And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
