Game 1 Mike Schmidt had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 5 to 2.
Vern Ruhle (2-1) gave Montreal a solid outing. He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. The Chicago NL batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th.
Elias Sosa got the save, his 4th. Rick Reuschel (1-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and no walks in 7 innings.
Game 2 Woodie Fryman had a strong outing and Warren Cromartie had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 0.
Montreal set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. That was all the runs Fryman (2-0) needed. Montreal totaled 14 on the night.
Dennis Lamp (0-3) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around by Montreal, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Alan Bosslet lamented, 'Fryman was really aggressive today. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
Game 3 Warren Cromartie had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs by the count of 12 to 6.
Cromartie was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He laced a single in the 1st inning, laced a base-knock in the 3rd inning, lined a one-base hit which scored a run in the 4th inning and tripled plating three runs in the 7th inning. Montreal bats were very productive in the 7th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits. Montreal out-hit Chicago NL for the game, 20 hits to 12.
Frank Tanana (4-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 4 runs. Ray Burris (0-4) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
Game 4 Glenn Adams had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs 6 to 2.
Montreal took the lead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring a single run. Montreal ended up with 12 hits for the game while Chicago NL had 7.
The win was credited to Larry Christenson (3-1) who went 7 innings allowing 2 runs. Elias Sosa recorded the save, his 5th. Bill Bonham (0-3) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. |
