Game 1 Juan Beniquez went deep and had 3 RBI at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals staged a comeback win over the Montreal Expos by the count of 5 to 4.
St. Louis scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Enos Cabell started the inning off right when he slapped a base-hit. A balk was called. After an out was recorded, Beniquez stepped in and he smashed a two-run homer (his 2nd of the season) giving St. Louis the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. St. Louis banged out 11 on the night.
Mark Littell (2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Elias Sosa (1-2) was the loser in relief. Steve Dewing was all smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty dim there for a while, but our guys never gave up - and neither did our fans - they kept cheering us on. What a sweet win!'
Game 2 Steve Rogers allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard for St. Louis at Busch Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9 to 0.
Andre Dawson enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He stroked a base-hit in the 3rd inning, doubled plating a run in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 1st of the season) in the 6th inning. Montreal managed 8 in their victory.
Rogers (1-3) was credited with the shutout. Joaquin Andujar (0-2) suffered the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 8 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Steve Bivens was very impressed with his pitcher, Rogers , 'He had unusually good pitch placement tonight. It was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'
Game 3 Right fielder Ellis Valentine slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI at Busch Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 6 to 2.
Valentine was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He lined a base-hit plating a run in the 5th inning, cracked a two-run shot (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning and stroked a single in the 9th inning. Both teams totaled 10 on the night.
Vern Ruhle (3-1) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. The loss was charged to Jerry Koosman (1-5). He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up 10 hits and 6 walks.
Game 4 Left fielder Dan Ford ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Elias Sosa finished beautifully as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 9 to 6 at Busch Stadium.
Ford was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning. St. Louis could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.
The win was credited to Bill Atkinson (1-2) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run. Sosa got the save, his 6th. Rollie Fingers (1-1) was the loser in relief. |
