Game 1 At Briggs Stadium, the Detroit fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Carl Erskine (2-0) finally bested his Detroit opposite, Fred Hutchinson (1-2), by the score of 2 to 0.
Erskine was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 5 hits and 5 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA from 2.35 to 1.13. Boston AL had 13 hits overall, while Detroit had 5.
Erskine got help from Mickey Harris who earned his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Hutchinson . He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 13 hits and no walks. Game 2 Second baseman Bobby Doerr cracked 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Briggs Stadium where the Boston AL Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 12 to 4.
Doerr had a big day with his bat. He smacked a three-run homer in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning and lined a base-hit in the 9th inning. Boston AL had 19 hits overall, while Detroit had 10.
The win was credited to Joe Dobson (2-1) who went 6 innings allowing 2 runs. Bud Podbielan preserved the game for Dobson, recording his 1st. The loss was charged to Dizzy Trout (0-1). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 12 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Doerr said. 'We played well together as a team.' Game 3 Willard Nixon had a strong outing and Bobby Doerr went deep at Briggs Stadium as the Boston AL Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 11 to 3.
Boston AL wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Detroit was out-hit by Boston AL , 11 hits to 6.
Mel Parnell (1-2) went 5 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Parnell got help from Nixon who was credited with his 1st save. Art Houtteman (2-1) took the loss. He was knocked around by Boston AL , allowing 6 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. Game 4 Johnny Pesky had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Boston AL Red Sox outscored the Detroit Tigers 8 to 3.
Willie Ramsdell (2-0) gave a fine effort for Boston AL . He went 6 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 walks. Boston AL finished with 12 hits while Detroit ended up with 6.
The loss was charged to Sid Hudson (0-3). He surrendered 9 hits and no walks in 7 innings.
