Game 1 The Boston AL Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 5 to 2 at Crosley Field.
Boston AL came up with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Dom Dimaggio led off and he drew a walk. Johnny Pesky stepped up next and he drew a walk. Ted Williams then lost the ball over the fence for three runs. Two outs later Joe Garagiola stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Tom Wright came to the plate and drew a walk. Merrill Combs struck out, unable to help the rally. The early run support proved sufficient for Carl Erskine (4-0) and Boston AL. That was all the run support Erskine required. Cincinnati was out-hit by Boston AL , 10 hits to 7.
Erskine got relief help from Mickey Harris who gained credit for his 6th save. Ewell Blackwell (2-3) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 7 walks in 7 innings. Game 2 Third baseman Billy Martin rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Boston AL Red Sox topped the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by a score of 12 to 10 at Crosley Field.
The score was knotted at 9 after nine innings. Boston AL won it in the 10th inning. Lou Boudreau got things going when he stroked a base-hit. After an out was recorded; Tom Wright came to bat and laced a one-base hit. Johnny Pesky then drew a walk to load the bases. Bobby Doerr followed next and he hit a deep fly. Dom Dimaggio stepped into the box and singled. Dimaggio took second on the throw. Boston AL had 19 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 13.
The win was credited to Bud Podbielan (3-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Podbielan got help from Mickey Harris who was credited with his 7th save. Frank Hiller (1-2) was given the loss in relief. Game 3 40,791 fans watched an exciting game at Crosley Field. The Cincinnati Reds ended a long winless drought and topped the Boston AL Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Finally, Cincinnati pulled the game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Ray Boone hit a bases-empty home run giving Cincinnati the win as 40,791 happy fans joyfully celebrated. Overall Cincinnati out-hit Boston AL 13 to 8.
Johnny Vander Meer (1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Bud Podbielan (3-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.
